Sowmiya is a remarkable individual who has excelled both as an international athlete and as an Income Tax Inspector in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Sowmiya’s athletic journey began at age nine when her PE instructor recognized her talent and encouraged competition. Despite not having any interest in athletics at the time, Sowmiya entered the race and won, which sparked her passion for the sport. Her parents’ support and belief in her abilities motivated her to pursue athletics more seriously.
Achievements and Medals
Throughout her career, Sowmiya has accumulated an impressive collection of achievements. She competed in global multi-star combined events, finishing 16th, and won a medal at the 2019 Iran International Asian Athletic Indoor Competition. Domestically, she has earned 18 senior national medals, 19 junior national medals, and over 45 state-level medals. Additionally, she holds three All-India Inter University Medals and sets junior records in the 100-meter hurdle and combined events.
Sowmiya: A Proud Representative of India
Sowmiya takes immense pride in representing India on the international stage. One of her proudest moments was when she first wore the Indian sports uniform. She recalls a particularly difficult time when she and her coach, Sankaran, were denied access to the train at the Neyveli athletic stadium. After winning a national gold medal, the same venue honored her in a ceremony—a triumphant moment that symbolized her resilience and determination.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Sowmiya has had to overcome several hurdles, including injuries and missing out on the Asian Games. Yet she remains focused on competing in the 2026 Games. Despite the pressure to perform and the sacrifices she has made in both her personal and professional life, Sowmiya maintains a positive mindset. She finds inspiration in movies like The Pursuit of happyness and relies on a strong support system made up of family, friends, and coaches. Sowmiya also places great emphasis on mental health and balance. She believes that taking care of her body and mind, staying focused on her goals, and being resilient in the face of setbacks are keys to achieving success. She also ensures that she carves out time for rest and relaxation to recharge and perform at her best.
Looking toward the future, Sowmiya’s goals are twofold: she aims to continue breaking records and winning medals at the highest levels of competition, and she plans to open a sports academy exclusively for girls. Her vision is to empower young female athletes by providing top-notch training, mentorship, and a supportive environment, helping them break barriers in sports and build confidence.
