Anuj Kumar Rroyy in a recent interview with Luxurious Dreams Magazine, founder Anurag Kapoor, Anuj Kumar Rroyy shared his experience. Anuj Kumar Rroyy, a, a passionate director, opened up about his journey in the world of theater and filmmaking. Anuj’s love for storytelling began with stage performances. He acted in his first play, Kadwa Sach, in 1995. Growing up, he performed in numerous plays written by his father, Shitanshu Arun. His uncle, Shri Ajay Atal, directed several of these productions. These early experiences laid a strong foundation for his passion for storytelling. This early exposure made storytelling second nature to him, igniting his aspiration to direct films.
When Anuj Kumar Rroyy moved to Delhi in 2009 to pursue a degree in mass communication, his passion for direction grew even stronger. During college, he gained both technical skills and the creative freedom to work on multiple student projects, which he recalls were essential to his growth as a filmmaker. His first significant short film, Khamoshi—The Silent Word, directed in 2016 with Amresh Kumar Singh, marked his entry into film. This project was followed by another short film, Aatm Glani, and a documentary titled Clocking Journey from Maya to Rajveer, which delved into the experiences of trans men. Anuj’s work broadened as he explored storytelling through various formats, including feature films and web series.
Breaking into Feature Films
Anuj’s first big break came when producer and writer Praveen Kumar invited him to direct Yamuna Paar, his debut feature film. Although the cast primarily consisted of emerging actors, Anuj embraced the challenge, and the film garnered attention on OTT platforms. This experience paved the way for Mahua Ghatwarin, a feature in the regional Angika language, which earned him the Best Director Feature award at the Reel International Film Festival. Reflecting on this, Anuj mentioned, “Working with actors from across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and across the nation beyond was incredibly rewarding, and the recognition motivated him to keep refining my craft.”
Web Series: A New Avenue for Storytelling
Anuj’s recent directorial venture, Bhakshan 1.O, is a web series produced by Kamakhya Flicks Productions. It delves into political power struggles. Written by Shikhar Srivastava, Bhakshan features characters like Raskhan Chacha, played by Mustak Khan. His humorous camaraderie with Puttan Miyan, portrayed by Manoj K Prasad, captures the rustic charm of village life. “The series explores complex relationships with humor and drama,” he shared. It also highlights local nuances that resonate with audiences. Anuj hinted at its upcoming release around Holi.
For Anuj, the web series format offers creative liberty unmatched by traditional films. “In a series, I can give each character the time to develop and build engaging cliffhangers,” he said. This approach allows viewers to form a deeper connection with the story.
Influences and Advice for Aspiring Directors
Anuj draws inspiration from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand sets and Anurag Kashyap’s creative use of public spaces. He also admires Ram Gopal Varma for breaking cinematic rules, which has shaped Anuj’s approach to framing scenes.
For budding filmmakers, Anuj emphasized the importance of studying stories and building technical skills. “The more you read, the better you’ll visualize and bring stories to life,” he advised.
