Bihar has achieved a significant milestone in school-level sports as two young taekwondo players, Himanshu Kumar and Vishal Kumar, secured their places in the Indian team for the ISF Gymnasiad 2026. The selection was made during the SGFI Under-18 Taekwondo Selection Trials 2026, held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on September 14 and 15. Their impressive performances at the national-level selection trials have earned them the opportunity to represent India at the international sporting event scheduled to take place from December 3 to 8, 2026, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Strong Performances Earn National Team Places
Himanshu Kumar from Sheikhpura district secured his selection in the Under-51 kg category, while Vishal Kumar from Gopalganj district earned his place in the Under-68 kg category. Both athletes demonstrated their competitive ability during the selection process and successfully secured positions in the Indian contingent. Their achievement highlights the growing participation and performance of young athletes from Bihar in competitive sports. The selection also reflects the potential of players emerging from different districts of the state and progressing through structured school-level and national sporting platforms.
Bihar Players Set for International Competition
According to Bihar State Sports Authority Director General-cum-Chief Executive Officer Ravindran Shankaran, both players will now represent India at the ISF Gymnasiad 2026 in Rio de Janeiro. The ISF Gymnasiad is an important international sporting platform for school athletes from different parts of the world, providing young players with an opportunity to compete at a global level. For Bihar, the selection of athletes from Sheikhpura and Gopalganj is particularly significant as it demonstrates that sporting talent from smaller cities and districts can reach international platforms through dedication, training and competitive performance.
Coaching Support Behind the Achievement
The progress of Himanshu Kumar and Vishal Kumar has also been supported by their coaching team. Coach Vivek Prakash and Manager Khushboo Kumari played an important role in guiding and supporting the players throughout their preparation and selection journey.
