ICAR Day: Celebrating the Backbone of Indian Agriculture

Every year, July 16 is observed as ICAR Day across the nation to commemorate the founding of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) — the premier organization responsible for agricultural research, education, and extension in India. Established in 1929, originally as the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, the body was later renamed after independence to reflect its national character and mission.
ICAR operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and today manages one of the largest national agricultural systems in the world, with over 100 institutes, 75 agricultural universities, and more than 11,000 scientists and technical staff dedicated to the cause of food and farming.

The Historical Context

In the pre-independence era, India faced recurring famines, poor agricultural productivity, and lack of scientific support for farmers. Recognizing the urgent need for agricultural reform, the Royal Commission on Agriculture recommended the formation of an apex research body — leading to the birth of ICAR on 16 July 1929.
Post-independence, ICAR played a central role in enabling the Green Revolution during the 1960s–70s, which transformed India from a food-deficit nation to one of the world’s largest producers of wheat, rice, and other staples.

Pioneering Contributions

ICAR’s contributions extend across diverse fields — from the development of high-yielding crop varieties, livestock improvement, and soil & water conservation, to fisheries, horticulture, and climate-resilient agriculture. The organization is also at the forefront of promoting agri-entrepreneurship, digitization, and women empowerment in rural India.
Research outcomes from ICAR have led to increased productivity, better income for farmers, and sustainable farming practices. Moreover, its extension services and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) bridge the gap between lab innovations and field applications.

Significance of ICAR Day

ICAR Day is a time to reflect on India’s agricultural progress and honor the scientists, innovators, and farmers who have contributed to the nation’s food security and rural development. On this day, ICAR hosts exhibitions, award ceremonies, lectures, and awareness drives to inspire the next generation of agri-leaders.
As agriculture continues to face new-age challenges — from climate change to market volatility — ICAR remains committed to providing innovative, inclusive, and sustainable solutions.
Let us celebrate ICAR Day not just as a tribute to the past, but as a pledge to continue building a resilient, tech-driven, and farmer-friendly future.

“Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy. Unless we strengthen it with science and technology, the nation cannot progress.”
— Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
