Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and her crewmate Butch Wilmore have safely returned to Earth after an unexpected nine-month-long space mission. Their successful return has brought relief to NASA and sparked celebrations in India.
A One-Week Mission That Stretched to Nine Months
Sunita and Wilmore launched aboard the Boeing Starliner capsule in June 2024, with the original plan being a short one-week test mission to the International Space Station (ISS). However, due to technical issues, their return was repeatedly delayed, turning their brief mission into an extended nine-month stay in space.
According to NASA, their spacecraft faced several technical glitches, preventing an earlier return. Despite these challenges, the two astronauts conducted over 150 scientific experiments, which will contribute to future space exploration.
