India leads global milk production. It contributes 25% of the world’s milk. Production increased significantly. It rose from 187.3 MT to 230.58 MT. This growth occurred between 2018-19 and 2022-23.
India’s per capita milk availability is high. It stands at 459 grams daily. This far exceeds the global average. Daily global milk availability averages 322 grams. More than 80 million Indian farmers participate in dairy farming.
Women play a key role. They form 35% of dairy cooperative members. These members are spread across 48,000 societies. India has 230,000 dairy villages. They encompass 18 million cooperative members. The nation’s livestock count is vast. It exceeds 536 million animals. This includes 303 million bovines.

Empowering Dairy Growth Through Schemes
Various schemes drive dairy progress. The Rashtriya Gokul Mission is one such scheme. It develops indigenous cattle breeds. Artificial Insemination coverage is expanding. Over 7 crore animals now benefit. Sex-sorted semen is available. It ensures up to 90% female calf births. Bovine IVF labs are active. They produced 11,583 embryos. About 1,800 calves have been born.
The NPDD boosts milk infrastructure. It added significant processing capacity. This is 24.82 lakh litres daily. Over 6,000 bulk milk coolers exist. They improve village-level milk storage. The LHDCP supports animal health. It provides vaccination services. Mobile veterinary services reach rural areas.
The National Livestock Mission promotes entrepreneurship. It also focuses on feed development. AHIDF encourages private investment. This includes processing and feed units. Kisan Credit Cards offer easy loans. These loans benefit dairy farmers nationwide.
