Big Boost for Rabi Crops: Highest-Ever MSP Increases Approved

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved a record increase in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated Rabi crops for the 2026-27 marketing season. This move aims to ensure farmers receive rewarding returns and to incentivize crop diversification across the country.

Highest Gains for Safflower and Lentil

For 2026-27, Safflower has received the highest increase in MSP, rising by ₹600 to reach ₹6,540 per quintal. Lentil (Masur) has also seen a major jump, with an increase of ₹300, taking its MSP to ₹7,000 per quintal. Other crops have also benefited: Rapeseed & Mustard now has an MSP of ₹6,200 with a ₹250 hike, Gram stands at ₹5,875 with a ₹225 increase, Barley reaches ₹2,150 with a ₹170 increase, and Wheat’s MSP is now ₹2,585 after a ₹160 hike.

The MSP hikes uphold the government’s policy of setting prices at least 1.5 times the nation’s average cost of production. Projected profit margins over cost of production are substantial for all major crops: Wheat (109%), Rapeseed & Mustard (93%), Lentil (89%), Gram (59%), Barley (58%), and Safflower (50%).

This bold move by the government guarantees better income for farmers while encouraging them to expand cultivation to more oilseeds and pulses, supporting both agricultural sustainability and national food security. The revised MSPs strengthen farmers’ economic position and encourage more balanced, diversified cropping across Rabi seasons.
