IPL 2025: Saliva Ban Lifted, New Ball Rule Introduced

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced two major changes for IPL 2025. The saliva ban lifted after nearly four years means bowlers can once again use saliva to shine the ball, restoring a crucial element of swing bowling. Additionally, a new ball will be introduced after the 11th over in the second innings of all night matches to counter the effects of dew. These changes aim to create a more balanced contest between bat and ball, making the game fairer and more competitive.

No More Dew Advantage

One of the biggest challenges in night matches has been the effect of dew, which makes it difficult for bowlers to grip the ball. This often gives the team batting second an unfair advantage, especially in high-scoring chases. To address this issue, BCCI has decided to introduce a fresh ball after the 11th over in the second innings of all night matches. This move is expected to help bowlers regain control and bring more balance to the contest.

Why Was the Saliva Ban Lifted?

The use of saliva to shine the ball was banned during the COVID-19 pandemic due to health concerns. However, with the situation returning to normal, the demand to lift the ban had been growing. Many cricketers, especially fast bowlers, argued that saliva plays a crucial role in generating swing and reverse swing. Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was among the most vocal advocates for this change, stating that bowlers need saliva to maintain the ball effectively. His views were echoed by former South African speedster Vernon Philander and New Zealand’s Tim Southee.

With the saliva ban lifted, bowlers can once again use traditional methods to shine the ball, which is expected to enhance swing and make bowling more effective. This decision is seen as a positive step for maintaining the balance between bat and ball in the game.

Umpires to Have the Final Say

While the new ball rule applies only to night matches, the decision to replace the ball will rest with the on-field umpires. If they feel that the dew is making it too difficult for bowlers to grip the ball, they will have the authority to introduce a fresh ball. However, in afternoon matches, this rule will not be applicable.

With the saliva ban lifted and the introduction of a new ball in night matches, IPL 2025 is set to be even more thrilling. These changes ensure a fair contest between bat and ball, making the tournament more competitive and exciting for players and fans alike.
