TIDC Scouts Focus on Athlete Discipline and Technique, Says Top Cycling Coach Maxwell Trevor
Patna, May 15: TIDC cycling member Maxwell Trevor says scouts evaluate warm-up routines and discipline, not just field performance. A former 11-time national champion and 1986 Asian Games contender, Trevor is currently one of India’s leading cycling coaches. During the Khelo India Youth Games 2025, Trevor described TIDC’s approach to discovering talented young cyclists.
He said, “We focus on athletes aged 14-16. We assess their pedaling style, discipline, and equipment usage.”
“Athletes using proper warm-ups and discipline stand out,” he added.
Scouts look for athletes who can train long-term with coaches and show strong lower body structure.
They examine equipment like bike frames and wheels, as these significantly affect performance and potential. Cycling-specific tests are conducted to measure cadence, heart rate, and power output using connected computers.
Mental strength matters too. Trevor said many athletes have talent but lack confidence, which affects performance. Speaking about top cycling regions, he highlighted Rajasthan for endurance, Manipur and Andaman for sprints, and Maharashtra and Karnataka overall.
Trevor acknowledged his coach Mumtaz Ahmed and praised the federation’s focus on grassroots development. He mentioned UCI Level 1 coaching courses are now in India, boosting grassroots coach numbers nationwide.

Patna, May 15: Motivated by her father’s aspirations and the movie Dangal, Rutuja Santosh Gurav started wrestling when she was eight.
Initially hesitant, she committed to the sport after watching Dangal, which deeply motivated her. Her father, a daily wage worker, always stands by her during competitions, offering moral support despite limited technical knowledge. Rutuja won her first gold at the junior nationals in 2021, and again in 2022. In 2023, she won silver in nationals and gold in school games. Last year, she debuted internationally with a silver medal at the Junior Asian Championship in Thailand. At home, the financial struggle continues. Her family survives on modest earnings from her parents’ work.
Rutuja’s father said he often works overtime but never misses her competitions, even at financial cost. He sees the Khelo India scholarship scheme as vital for supporting her training, nutrition, and gear. On Wednesday, Rutuja began her under-17 46kg campaign with a 3-1 win over Khushi from Delhi. She won 4-0 against Bihar’s Rupa Kumari to move on to the final round. In the final, she held off Haryana’s Annu with a 3-1 win to secure the gold medal.
