New Delhi: On World Tuberculosis Day 2025 Day on March 24, global and national health institutions are again raising the alarm on one of the most lethal but treatable infectious diseases — tuberculosis (TB).
World Tuberculosis Day 2025
The theme this year, “Yes! We Can End TB,” is a strong message of hope, determination, and collective will to eliminate a disease that continues to infect millions each year.

What is TB, and Why Does it Matter?
TB is a bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Though most commonly found in the lungs, it can infect other parts of the body as well. It is transmitted by small droplets in the air when a patient with TB coughs or sneezes.
TB is despite being preventable and curable one of the global top 10 causes of death, especially in low- and middle-income nations.
India’s Battle with TB: Striving towards Elimination in 2025
India has the most TB burden anywhere in the world. India aims high — TB elimination by 2025, five years in advance of the global deadline envisaged by the World Health Organization.
The Centre’s programmes such as the Nikshay Poshan Yojana scheme, free tests and treatment of TB under NTEP, and community outreach by community health workers are ensuring that patients get detected and treated.
“TB is not a health problem alone; it’s a social one,” a top health official said. “We need mass awareness, compassion, and action to stop it.”
Symptoms to Watch Out For:
- Coughing that lasts longer than 2 weeks
- Coughing up blood
- Night sweats and fever
- Weight loss that happens suddenly
- Fatigue and weakness
If you or someone near you exhibits these symptoms, consult a doctor at once. Early detection saves lives.
What Can You Do?
- Spread awareness, not the infection
- Promote early diagnosis and full treatment
- Show compassion to TB patients — end the stigma
- Volunteer or give to TB-specific health programs
The Message is Clear:
“TB can be cured. It should not be feared — but it must not be ignored.”
As the world observes World TB Day 2025, the focus is not just on remembering the toll of tuberculosis, but also on reaffirming our commitment to defeating it. With timely action, strong policy, and public support, a TB-free world is possible.
